‘Head down to the street’ extended citywide to assist the elderly
The programme to assist the elderly ‘Baixem al carrer’ (Head down to the street), carried out in collaboration with the Red Cross, is being extended to cover the whole city. The move represents an expansion of 66% in just one year, with the 44 neighbourhoods currently covered by this free service to rise to all 73 neighbourhoods in Barcelona.
The service operates from Monday to Friday, between 9 am and 5 pm, and is designed for elderly people with mobility problems living in housing with architectural barriers which make it very difficult for them to get out into the street. This programme ensures they can get out at least once a week in the company of somebody else at no cost, for between two or three hours, reducing their isolation and improving their emotional welfare.
Municipal Social Services and the community networks in each area identify elderly people with profiles for participating in the programme, which is activated with the participation of Primary Healthcare Centres.
