Work begins to transform Hall 2 into a sports hall
Work got under way this week to turn the former Hall 2 at Fira de Barcelona into the new municipal sports centre for Poble-sec. The centre should be ready in April 2027.
In this first stage, two multi-purpose sports courts will be created for handball, basketball, indoor football and volleyball. The work includes the construction of a new foyer, storage facilities linked to the courts, a medical point, toilets and other service spaces. At a later stage, the facility will get new spaces and complementary services.
Located in Av. Rius i Taulet, this trade fair venue was conditioned between April and June this year as a support point for people in the special regularisation process for foreigners. Now it will become a permanent sports facility, adding to the current sports installations in the neighbourhood of Poble-sec and taking advantage of an existing building to give it a new use.
The transformation of the building into a sports hall forms part of the urban development of the whole area of Fira de Barcelona in Montjuïc, with the creation of a new urban fabric between Poble-sec and Font de la Guatlla and including 500 affordable homes and 48 homes with services, new local facilities and over 6,800 square metres of green space. Next to the hall, work began this summer to demolish Hall 4 and the Congress Hall, which is where the future multi-purpose centre will be built.
